After his team allowed a goal late in the first half of Thursday's home opener, Hays High School boys' soccer coach Chris Michaelis wanted a better effort in the second half against Salina Central.

The Norton prep football program has enjoyed a bevy of accomplishments. Entering 2010, the Bluejays carry a streak of 14 consecutive winning seasons and 10 straight playoff berths, both the Mid–Continent League's top current marks.

Last year, Hays High School football coach Ryan Cornelsen first talked to Austin Unrein about playing quarterback this year. Unrein was excited for the opportunity after he played wide receiver/kicker/punter during his first two years with the Indians.

Ringneck coach Chris Shank's wall next to his classroom desk is adorned with pictures and achievements of his head coaching career at Linn and Hill City. Another squad, though, is prominently displayed by the coaching mementos: Kansas State University.

Osborne and Downs–Lakeside high schools, located 12 miles apart, have a big rivalry in all sports, except football. Osborne has always played 11–man football, while Lakeside is in eight man.

OSBORNE –– The Osborne prep football team always enjoyed 11–man football even though victories were often rare. Since longtime coach Dave Johnson (210 wins) retired in 1990, the Bulldogs have had just one winning season, a 5–4 record in 2004.

The Ellis prep football team has holes to fill this season. One hole the Railroaders won't need to worry about is running back. Senior Jacob Kinderknecht, who played wide receiver as a sophomore and quarterback last year, will likely line up at running back this fall.

The second year of the Ryan Cornelsen era opens with a home game against Class 4A Chapman. The Indians won their first outright Western Athletic Conference football crown in school history last year with a 4–0 record.

LURAY –– High winds swept through parts of Russell County on Tuesday night, downing tree limbs and toppling a church bell tower in Luray. The damage, mainly confined to the Luray area, was a result of straight–line winds, according to Keith Haberer, emergency management director for Russell County.
