TMP jumps right into league action in its first year in the MCAA, playing Ellinwood in the season opener. The Class 3A Monarchs, under first–year coach Jon Borer, will go with the spread offense. Junior Nick Hammeke (4 TDs, 6 INTs) returns at quarterback after starting the final seven games in 2009.

OTIS –– Senior running back Mike Hlavaty and his Otis–Bison teammates have heard the doubters concerning the Cougars' 2010 season. Last year, Otis–Bison enjoyed the biggest jump of any football team, in the state vaulting from 2–7 to 10–1.

Last year, Hays High School football coach Ryan Cornelsen first talked to Austin Unrein about playing quarterback this year. Unrein was excited for the opportunity after he played wide receiver/kicker/punter during his first two years with the Indians.

There are a lot of question marks surrounding this year's Victoria prep football team. Last fall, the Knights made the playoffs and finished 10–2. But Victoria lost a host of key players off that squad, and will be looking to fill holes in 2010.

OSBORNE –– The Osborne prep football team always enjoyed 11–man football even though victories were often rare. Since longtime coach Dave Johnson (210 wins) retired in 1990, the Bulldogs have had just one winning season, a 5–4 record in 2004.

The Ellis prep football team has holes to fill this season. One hole the Railroaders won't need to worry about is running back. Senior Jacob Kinderknecht, who played wide receiver as a sophomore and quarterback last year, will likely line up at running back this fall.

LURAY –– High winds swept through parts of Russell County on Tuesday night, downing tree limbs and toppling a church bell tower in Luray. The damage, mainly confined to the Luray area, was a result of straight–line winds, according to Keith Haberer, emergency management director for Russell County.

Kansas AARP Tax–Aide is recruiting volunteers to help Kansas taxpayers prepare and file their tax returns next year. "Right now, it's critical we get more volunteers," said Bill Peterson, volunteer partnership and communication specialist. Without volunteers, several offices might have to be closed.
